The short answer
Fly for 25 to 30 minutes, or drive for 6 to 8 hours across roughly 200 km of mountain highway. The flight saves a day of your life; the road lets you stop at Bandipur or Manakamana.

How it works
- Flight: book a morning seatFlights take about 25 to 30 minutes and mountain views are better before cloud builds. Pokhara has a newer international airport too, so check your terminal.
- Road: leave by 7 amAbout 200 km on the Prithvi Highway through the Trishuli and Marsyangdi valleys. Expect landslide delays in monsoon.
- Stops worth makingManakamana cable car near Kurintar, Bandipur on a short detour, or a riverside lunch near Mugling.
Flight, car or bus: how they feel
The flight is about half an hour and gives mountain views from the left side on the way to Pokhara in clear weather, but you must allow airport time at both ends and accept possible delays. A private car takes several hours and suits families, seniors and anyone who wants to stop at Manakamana, Bandipur or a riverside lunch. A tourist bus is cheaper and has fixed times; it is comfortable enough for most but gives you less control.
Road journeys vary a lot with traffic and roadworks, so build in a buffer if you have a connecting flight or a booked activity the same day.
Which option for whom
Choose the flight when you have limited days. Choose a private car when the journey is part of the trip, when travelling with children, or when you want to stop. Choose the tourist bus for a budget trip with flexible time. Read the fuller comparison at Kathmandu to Pokhara: road or flight.
Insider tip
If you have the days, drive one way and fly the other. You get the scenery without paying for both journeys in hours.
Avoid this
Do not book a tight connection straight after the flight. Delays happen when the clouds sit low.

Is a tourist bus a good compromise?
Yes. Tourist coaches leave in the morning, make set meal stops and are more comfortable than local buses.
Can I do it in a day trip from Kathmandu?
Technically, by plane, but you lose the point of Pokhara, which is slowing down.
