When is the best time to visit Pokhara?

The short answer

October and November, then March and April. The air is clearest and the Annapurna range stands over the lake. In monsoon, cloud often hides the peaks for days.

Mar to Apr

Jun to Sep

Dec to Feb
Cool, clear mornings

How it works

  1. October to November: the peakClear skies and sharp views of Annapurna and Machhapuchhre. Hotels fill, and lakeside prices rise. Book two months ahead.
  2. March to April: warm and greenDays are warm, hill flowers bloom, and mountains fade into haze by midday. Mornings are best.
  3. June to September: rain and greenHeavy rain turns the hills intensely green and thins crowds, but views are mostly cloud. Paragliding pauses.

Reading the seasons at the lake

Autumn brings the clearest views of the Annapurna and Machhapuchhre peaks reflected in the lake, with comfortable days and cool nights. Spring is warm and often hazy by afternoon, but early mornings are good. Winter has crisp mornings and mild afternoons; it is lovely if you are happy with a light jacket. Monsoon fills the lake and hills with green, with showers that clear the air briefly but often hide the peaks.

Adventure activities run in the dry months and are weather-dependent in monsoon, so check with operators before you book.

Planning around weather

Do sunrise first: viewpoints are at their best in the first hours. Keep an indoor option for afternoons, and avoid scheduling flights or paragliding on your last day. Pack a rain layer in any season except winter.

Insider tip

Pokhara is warmer and stickier than Kathmandu. Even in winter you may be glad of a fan.

Avoid this

Do not judge the monsoon by a forecast icon alone. Mornings can be clear and the mountains sharp.
