Where should you stay in Pokhara?

The short answer

Lakeside is the default: lively, walkable and close to the boats. Damside is quieter, and hillside or Sarangkot stays trade convenience for the best views.

Key facts

Lakeside
Most choice, restaurants, boats
Damside
Calmer, edge-of-lake
Hillside
Mountain views, a drive from town

How it works

  1. Lakeside (Baidam)Walk to restaurants, boats and the paragliding landing field. Quieter at the southern end, livelier near the main strip.
  2. DamsideCalmer and cheaper, with local life and views of the lake edge and the Annapurnas.
  3. Sarangkot or hillsideA 30 to 40 minute drive from town, with Annapurna views from the room and easy access to sunrise.

Lakeside, Damside or the hills

Lakeside is the easiest base with restaurants, boats and shops within a short walk, and it suits first visits and families. Damside is calmer and has a village feel, with views of the lake and mountains from some hotels. Hillside and Sarangkot stays give the best views and quiet nights but require a drive into town, so they suit people who want stillness more than convenience.

Lake-view rooms cost more than street-facing ones, and views depend on the season, so check recent photos.

Questions to ask before booking

Ask about airport and bus pickup, early breakfast for sunrise trips, and whether the hotel can store bags if you trek. In winter, check heating and hot water. If you want sunrise from your balcony, confirm the exact direction of the room.

Insider tip

Pay a little extra for a room that actually faces the water or the mountains. The view is the whole point of Pokhara.

Avoid this

Do not accept "lake view" without asking which floor and which side; many rooms see only a rooftop.

Related questions

Where do paragliders land?

At the lakeside, so staying near it lets you watch from a cafe.

Is a lake resort worth it?

If views matter, yes. A room facing the water or the range changes the whole stay.
