Which documents should an Indian traveller carry for Nepal?

By Base Camp Tours, licensed Nepal travel agency (Tourism License 3121/080) · Updated · 2 min read

The short answer

Carry valid ID, copies, a few photos, booking confirmations and insurance details. If you drive your own vehicle, carry its papers and confirm the rules.

A small, organised document pouch saves time at borders, hotels and permit counters.

How it works

  1. Pack the essentialsValid photo ID, two photocopies of each document, a few passport-size photos and printed hotel bookings.
  2. Carry insurance and emergency detailsPolicy number, helpline, and family contact numbers in a separate place.
  3. Vehicle papers if drivingRegistration certificate, insurance, driving licence and the border permit.

The checklist

Bring your passport or accepted photo ID, two photocopies and a few passport-size photos, which are needed for treks, SIM cards and some permits. Add booking confirmations for hotels and tours, and your insurance policy and emergency numbers.

Keep a digital copy of everything in your email or phone, and a printed set in a different bag. Carry a few small notes for fees, and your operator's contact numbers.

If you drive your own vehicle

Carry the registration certificate, insurance, driving licence and pollution certificate. A temporary vehicle permit is issued at the border, with fees and rules that change, so confirm them with the customs office or your operator.

Check where your vehicle is allowed to go and for how long, and return before the permit expires. A hired vehicle with a local driver is often easier on mountain roads.

Insider tip

Keep a digital copy in your email as a backup.

Avoid this

Do not forget the vehicle rules if you drive in.
