Will your Indian SIM work in Nepal?

By Base Camp Tours, licensed Nepal travel agency (Tourism License 3121/080) · Updated · 2 min read

The short answer

Roaming may work but can be expensive. A local SIM bought with valid ID is often cheaper. Coverage is patchy in the mountains.

Decide before you travel whether you want roaming for convenience or a local SIM for value, and download what you need before you leave coverage.

How it works

  1. Check your roaming planSome Indian operators offer Nepal roaming packs. Compare the rate with a local SIM.
  2. Buy a local SIMNeeds ID and a photo. Available at the airport or in city shops.
  3. Download offline mapsSignal is patchy in the hills, so save maps, tickets and addresses.

Roaming or local SIM

International roaming works for Indian operators in many areas, but plans, charges and coverage vary, so check your operator's current offer. It keeps your number active, which is useful for OTPs and calls home.

A local SIM needs ID and a passport-size photo, and the shop registers it in your name. It often gives better data value. Test it before leaving the shop, and keep your Indian SIM safe for later.

Staying connected in the hills

Coverage is good in cities and along main roads, and patchy in valleys and at altitude. Do not rely on a signal on treks. Download maps, tickets and documents before you leave town.

Hotels and some lodges offer Wi-Fi, but speeds vary and it can be limited or charged. Keep a power bank, and tell family your plan for when you may be out of reach.

Insider tip

Download maps and tickets before you leave coverage.

Avoid this

Do not rely on mobile signal in remote areas.
