How it works in practice
In tourist areas and near the border, shops and drivers often accept Indian rupees, especially smaller notes. In villages and on treks, Nepali rupees are the safe choice, and some lodges will not accept Indian currency.
Larger Indian notes have had restrictions in the past, and officials can change the rules. Confirm the current position with your bank, your operator or an official source before you carry large amounts.
Getting Nepali rupees
Exchange at banks, hotels or authorised counters and keep the receipts. ATMs in cities usually accept Indian cards, but limits and fees apply. Withdraw before heading to the mountains.
Avoid street changers and carry small notes for tips, tea and entrance fees. Keep cash split between bags and use a hotel safe for spare money.
Insider tip
Mountain areas run on cash. Plan accordingly.
Avoid this
Do not assume large notes will be accepted. Check first.
