How it works

  1. Classic: Kathmandu and PokharaFive to seven days, with a flight or road between them.
  2. Pilgrimage: Janakpur, Lumbini, MuktinathSeven to ten days, combining roads and flights.
  3. Wildlife: ChitwanTwo nights added to any plan.

The most common trips

The classic is Kathmandu and Pokhara, with temples, Pashupatinath, the lake and mountain views. Chitwan adds a jungle safari, and Lumbini adds the birthplace of the Buddha. Janakpur is a city of Sita and a draw for Hindu pilgrims.

Muktinath is a high pilgrimage, reached by flight to Jomsom or by road, and often combined with Pokhara. Kailash Mansarovar is a separate, longer yatra.

Choosing a trip

Match the trip to your group. Families with older parents suit shorter drives and low altitude, while friends may add adventure activities. Pilgrimage groups should plan for rest days.

Choose a length that does not squeeze the places you care about. Seven to ten days is common for the classic route, and a separate plan suits Muktinath or Kailash. Talk to a planner about the season and the pace.

Insider tip

Pilgrimage tours are the strongest draw from Indian cities.

Avoid this

Do not squeeze all of Nepal into five days.
