The short answer
Siddhartha Gautama was born in Lumbini, grew up in Kapilvastu, left his palace life, practised austerities, and attained enlightenment under the Bodhi tree in India. He then taught for decades and passed away in Kushinagar. In tradition, four great signs, an old man, a sick man, a dead body and a wandering ascetic, set him on his spiritual path.
His teachings centre on the Four Noble Truths, which describe suffering and the way beyond it, and the Noble Eightfold Path of right view, intention, speech, action, livelihood, effort, mindfulness and concentration. A short read before your visit makes the sites more meaningful.
