The short answer
Inside the Lumbini Development Zone, monasteries built by Buddhist communities from many countries stand in two groups: the East zone for Theravada and the West zone for Mahayana and Vajrayana. A long canal and walking paths link them, and you can walk or hire a bicycle or rickshaw.
The central heritage area has the Maya Devi Temple, the sacred pond (Puskarini), the Ashokan pillar that records the Buddha's birth, and the eternal flame for peace. Start here, then walk the monastic zones in the cooler part of the day.
