What you will see
From Sarangkot, the whole Annapurna range appears above Pokhara, with Machhapuchhre's fish-tail peak standing in front. As the sun rises, the snow turns from pink to gold, and Phewa Lake gleams in the valley below. The viewpoint is also popular with paragliders, who launch from the ridge in the morning.
On a clear morning the effect is magical, but cloud can hide the peaks, so keep a second morning in case the first fails. The mood is best when you arrive before dawn and stay for the changing light.
How to do it well
Leave Pokhara early, usually by taxi or with your hotel's help, and allow time to walk to the viewing tower. Carry a warm layer, a torch and a camera, and order tea at the top. After sunrise, many people walk down through the village or add a visit to the Peace Pagoda.
In the monsoon the view is often hidden, so choose autumn or spring for the best chance. Respect other visitors and the local community, and take your rubbish with you.
Insider tip
Order tea at the viewpoint and stay for the second show: the light on Machhapuchhre changes after the sun clears the ridge.
Avoid this
Do not go in monsoon and expect a view. If you want a viewpoint in the rain, ask a local about low hills instead.
