What makes Ghandruk special
Ghandruk is a large Gurung village perched on a ridge, known for its slate-roofed stone houses, steep stone stairways and views of Annapurna South, Hiunchuli and Machhapuchhre. The Gurung people are famous for their hospitality and for their long association with the Gurkha regiments, and a small museum tells the story of their culture.
The village has several well-kept lodges, so you can stay in comfort and still feel the character of a mountain community. In the evening, the stone lanes fill with the smell of woodsmoke, and the peaks turn pink at sunrise.
Getting there and how long to stay
The road from Pokhara and Nayapul takes you most of the way, and the final stretch is a walk or a jeep ride depending on the road conditions. One night is enough to see the village at both ends of the day, and two nights give time for a short walk and a longer rest.
Combine Ghandruk with a short Poon Hill trek or a loop to Landruk and Dhampus if you have days. Wear shoes with grip for the stone steps, and ask your host about local dishes and village walks.
Insider tip
Stay in the upper part of the village and walk down for sunset; the light on the stone roofs is the best of the day.
Avoid this
Do not treat it as a drive-in lunch stop. The magic is the evening and the morning.
