When is the best time for the Annapurna region?

The short answer

October and November for clarity, March and April for flowers. Monsoon brings leeches and cloud; winter closes some of the high lodges.

Key facts

Oct to Nov
Clear and busy
Mar to Apr
Warm, rhododendrons
Dec to Feb
Cold, snow at altitude
Jun to Sep
Rain and leeches

Season by season

October and November give the clearest air, stable weather and the busiest trails. March and April are warmer, with rhododendrons in bloom and a softer haze over the peaks. May is hotter, with more cloud later in the month.

Winter brings cold, quiet trails and crisp views, though snow can close high passes and some lodges at altitude. The monsoon, from June to September, is wet, with leeches on lower trails and views often hidden by cloud.

Choosing by trek

For short foothill treks such as Poon Hill, spring and autumn are best, and winter is possible with warm layers. For the Annapurna Circuit and high passes, choose the clear months and check the conditions at Thorong La.

The dry, high valley of Mustang, in the Annapurna rain shadow, is a good choice in the monsoon. Book flights, permits and lodges early for October, and keep spare days in your plan.

Insider tip

March and April add haze on the peaks but green and red on the lower hills; if you love rhododendrons, choose April.

Avoid this

Do not plan the Annapurna Circuit in deep winter without checking the pass conditions.
