What is Phortse and why do trekkers stay there?

The short answer

Phortse is a Sherpa village of around 80 households at roughly 3,950 metres in the Sagarmatha National Park area, above the Dudh Koshi river. It is known as a community-run village with homestays, tea shops and lodges, and for forests that shelter wildlife such as Himalayan tahr and musk deer.

It sits on a high trail that rejoins the main Everest route, so trekkers can use it on the way up or down for a quieter stay. Because the altitude is high, build acclimatisation into the plan, and ask your guide about trail conditions. Visits support local families when you stay and eat there.
