The short answer
Ilam, in the far east near Darjeeling, is known for tea estates around Kanyam and Fikkal, which are popular for walks and photography. Antu Danda, at about 2,300 metres, is a ridge known for sunrise and sunset views over the plains and, on clear days, hills across the border.
Other stops include Siddhi Thumka, a viewpoint, Chhintapu, a higher ridge with rhododendron, and religious sites such as Mai Beni, where a winter bathing fair is held, and a small Pathibhara shrine. Homestays are available around Antu. Allow two to three days, and use the east entry at Kakarbhitta from the Indian side.
