The short answer
Taplejung is the gateway to the Kanchenjunga region and to Pathibhara Devi, a shrine at about 3,800 metres that is a pilgrimage for Hindus and Buddhists. It also has old monasteries such as the one at Olangchungola, and Limbu cultural trails with homestays at villages such as Khewang, Kande Bhanjyang and Mamankhe.
The area is remote, so plan extra days. Road and flight access can change by season, so check the current options. Lodges, tea shops and community campsites are used along the way. The pilgrimage takes several days, and the best seasons are spring and autumn.
