What are good day trips from Pokhara?

The short answer

Begnas Lake, Ghandruk village and Sarangkot are the easy ones. None needs a trek, so they suit families and seniors too.

Key facts

Begnas and Rupa lakes
About 15 km, calm water
Ghandruk
Gurung village with mountain views
Sarangkot
Sunrise, quick by road

How it works

  1. Ghandruk (3 to 4 hours each way)A large Gurung village with stone lanes and close views of Annapurna South and Machhapuchhre. Better as an overnight if you can.
  2. Begnas and Rupa lakes (about 45 minutes)Quiet boating, birdwatching and fish lunches in a village restaurant, away from the Phewa crowd.
  3. Sarangkot by road (30 to 40 minutes)Best at dawn. Sit in a tea shop and watch the light change on the range.

Easy options from the lake

Begnas and Rupa lakes offer calm water, boating and fish restaurants, and feel very different from lively Lakeside. Ghandruk is a Gurung village with stone paths and mountain views, reached by road and a short walk. Sarangkot is a quick drive for sunrise or a gentle hike. None of these requires trekking fitness.

Many can be combined with a half-day sightseeing tour or done as a quiet day.

Choosing between them

Choose Begnas for rest, Ghandruk for culture and views, and Sarangkot for the sunrise experience. If you have only one free day, pick the one that suits the weather: clear mornings suit Sarangkot, cloudy days suit the village or lake.

Insider tip

Ghandruk is the one that feels like the hills rather than the lake. Go early, eat in the village and come back by the afternoon.

Avoid this

Do not drive hill roads in heavy monsoon rain without checking conditions first.

Related questions

Is it worth hiring a driver?

Yes. A day driver costs little more than a few taxis, and handles waiting and haggling.

Which day trip is best in the rain?

Gupteshwor Cave and the museum in town, or a cafe by Begnas Lake.
