The short answer
Beyond the three royal squares, the valley holds a ring of smaller Newar towns that still run on old rhythms: Kirtipur on its hill, Khokana and Bungamati to the south, Thimi to the east and Sankhu to the north-east. They are quieter, cheaper and less photographed than Bhaktapur, which is the whole point.
A good day links two or three that sit near each other. Combine Kirtipur with Khokana and Bungamati in the morning, or Thimi with Bhaktapur and Changu Narayan, and leave Sankhu for its own half-day. Go with a driver who knows the lanes, since signs are rare.
