What are the best day trips from Kathmandu?

By Base Camp Tours, licensed Nepal travel agency (Tourism License 3121/080) · Updated · 2 min read

The short answer

Bhaktapur, Patan, Changu Narayan, Nagarkot and Dhulikhel all sit within about 90 minutes and need no change of hotel. Pair them by direction to avoid doubling back.

Key facts

Patan
About 5 km; half a day
Bhaktapur
About 13 km; half to full day
Nagarkot
About 32 km; sunrise or sunset
Dhulikhel and Namobuddha
About 30 to 40 km; a full day

How it works

  1. East loop: Bhaktapur, Changu Narayan and NagarkotAbout 80 km in total. Do Bhaktapur in the morning, Changu Narayan at midday and sunset at Nagarkot.
  2. South loop: Patan, Kirtipur and GodavariPatan in the morning, the hill town of Kirtipur and the botanical garden at Godavari after lunch.
  3. Hill loop: Dhulikhel and NamobuddhaA full day with a short walk to the hilltop monastery.

Pairing trips by direction

Group the trips by road so you do not double back. East: Bhaktapur and Changu Narayan form one natural day, with Nagarkot as a sunset or sunrise add-on. South: Patan and Bungamati and Khokana fit a relaxed half day. Southeast: Dhulikhel, Namobuddha and Panauti make a full day of hills and old towns. North: Shivapuri and Sundarijal suit hikers and picnic days.

Most of these trips can be done from the same hotel. Overnight stays in Bhaktapur, Nagarkot or Dhulikhel add atmosphere and avoid the morning drive.

Making the most of a day trip

Leave early. Roads fill by mid-morning and many of the best light conditions are before 9 a.m. Take water, a hat and a light layer, and ask your driver where to eat so you do not lose an hour searching. Combine one active stop with one slow stop: a short walk followed by a long lunch tends to be the most enjoyable rhythm.

Insider tip

East of the city, Bhaktapur, Changu Narayan and Nagarkot chain together neatly, so you can finish the day watching light on the hills.

Avoid this

Do not plan three far-flung excursions in three days; the valley roads are slower than the map suggests.
