What are Khokana and Bungamati known for?

By Base Camp Tours, licensed Nepal travel agency (Tourism License 3121/080) · Updated · 1 min read

The short answer

Khokana is famous for mustard oil: the village presses it in traditional mills and the oil is an everyday part of Newar cooking. Its brick lanes and old houses are a calm break from the city, with Shikali temple at the centre. Bungamati, a short drive away, is the home of Rato Machhindranath, a god of rain and compassion, and the town is known for woodcarving.

Both were damaged in the 2015 earthquake and have been slowly repaired, so some buildings may still be propped or rebuilt. Visit with an open mind and give a little time to the craft workshops, where carvers are usually happy to show their work.
