The short answer
Sankhu is an old Newar town at the north-eastern edge of the valley, with a street of tall brick houses and a long staircase climbing to the Vajrayogini temple in the forest above. The town is one of the quietest of the valley's old settlements, and the stairs and forest make it a pleasant half-day.
The Vajrayogini complex is a revered Buddhist and Newar shrine, with carved gates, a courtyard and views back towards the town. Allow time for the climb and keep respectful, as worshippers often arrive with offerings.
