Should you travel from India to Nepal by air or by road?

The short answer

Fly if you are coming from a big city and want speed. Go by road if you live nearby, carry a lot or want to see the land on the way. Common crossings include Raxaul-Birgunj and Sunauli-Bhairahawa.

Both work well. The best choice depends on your starting point, your time and how much you enjoy the journey itself.

How it works

  1. Fly from big citiesDirect flights link Delhi, Mumbai and other cities with Kathmandu. Booking early gets better fares.
  2. Go by road from the border beltRaxaul-Birgunj, Sunauli-Bhairahawa and Kakarbhitta are the main crossings, with rail heads nearby.
  3. Mix modesTake the train to the border, then fly or drive. It can save money and time.

Flying in

Direct flights link several Indian cities with Kathmandu, and some travellers fly to Bhairahawa or Pokhara. Flying saves a day or more from distant cities and is comfortable for families and seniors. Book early for festival periods and check baggage limits.

Arrive with documents ready, and arrange a pickup in advance. Weather and operational changes can affect schedules, so keep a spare day on the way home.

Going by road

Road crossings in the south, such as Raxaul to Birgunj and Sunauli to Bhairahawa, suit travellers from Bihar and Uttar Pradesh. The journey allows you to see the land, but border queues and traffic vary, and the road to Kathmandu takes a long day.

Cross in the morning, carry documents and small notes, and avoid driving after dark. If you drive your own vehicle, check permit rules first. For comfort, many choose a private vehicle with a local driver.

Insider tip

Road works best for travellers from Bihar and Uttar Pradesh.
