The short answer
Surkhet (Birendranagar) is the main town of Karnali and the usual gateway to the province, set in an inner Terai valley. It is a practical stop with hotels, markets and an airport. Just outside, Kakre Vihara is an old Buddhist monastery site in forest, believed to date to medieval times, with a peaceful setting and nearby temples such as Deuti Bajai.
Use Surkhet for a night to rest, then visit Kakre Vihara in the morning. It also works as the start for a road journey into the hills toward Dullu and Dailekh.
