The short answer
Nepal is small on the map but crowded with well-known places, and they fall into five natural groups. The capital valley holds Kathmandu Durbar Square, Swayambhunath, Boudhanath, Pashupatinath, Patan and Bhaktapur. The lake city of Pokhara gives you Phewa Lake, Sarangkot and the Annapurna views. In the south, Chitwan and Bardia offer jungle, and Lumbini is the birthplace of the Buddha. High in the north sit Everest, the Annapurna range, Langtang and Mustang.
Use the list below as a map in words, not a checklist. Annapurna, Bandipur, Dhulikhel, Gorkha, Janakpur, Muktinath, Nagarkot, Tansen, Rara Lake and Ilam all earn a visit if your route passes near them, but nobody sees everything in one trip. Pick one mountain area, one city base and one lowland or heritage stop, and the trip will feel full rather than rushed.
