The short answer
Two nights. That fits a jeep safari, a guided jungle walk, a canoe ride and a Tharu village visit without feeling hurried. One night means a single safari and a lot of driving.

How it works
- Day 1: arrive, ease inReach Sauraha by lunch, then a short Tharu village walk or sunset on the Rapti riverbank.
- Day 2: the full jungle dayEarly canoe or bird walk, a guided walk with a naturalist, a jeep safari after lunch.
- Day 3: depart slowlyA final sunrise walk, then onward to Pokhara, Lumbini or Kathmandu.
Why two nights is the sweet spot
A typical two-night stay lets you arrive in time for an afternoon activity, do a full day of safari, canoe and walk, and leave after a relaxed morning. The park's best moments tend to be early morning and late afternoon, so a short stay leaves little room for them.
With three nights you can add a second safari, a village visit and a slow day by the river. With one night you get a taste but a lot of road time for a short experience.
What a day usually looks like
Early tea, a guided walk or canoe at first light, breakfast, a rest during the heat, then a jeep safari in the afternoon and a cultural programme in the evening. Lodges organise this, but ask what is included so you do not pay for the same activity twice.
Insider tip
The best sightings tend to come at the edges of the day, so pick a lodge that makes early starts easy.
Avoid this
Do not treat Chitwan as a stop between Kathmandu and Pokhara with a few hours to spare. The drive eats the day.

It gives you one activity, plus the drive. Most travellers wish they had stayed longer.
Can I add a third night?
Yes, to repeat the best activity or to add Bis Hajari Tal, a large wetland with birds.
