The short answer
Gokyo is quieter and arguably more beautiful: turquoise lakes below the Ngozumba glacier, with Gokyo Ri (about 5,360 m) giving a wide view of Everest, Lhotse, Makalu and Cho Oyu. Base Camp gives the famous goal; Gokyo gives the better scenery.

A different kind of beauty
The Gokyo valley has a chain of turquoise lakes below the Ngozumba glacier. Gokyo Ri offers a wide view over the lakes, Everest, Cho Oyu and many other peaks. The area is quieter than the main Base Camp trail.
Many trekkers combine Gokyo with Everest Base Camp through the Cho La pass, though this makes the trek longer and more demanding.
Which to choose
Choose Everest Base Camp for the classic goal and the sense of arrival. Choose Gokyo for lakes and wide views with fewer people. Both need good acclimatisation.
Ask your operator which suits your time and fitness. The weather and season affect lake colour and visibility.
Insider tip
Many trekkers combine Gokyo with Base Camp via the Cho La pass.
Avoid this
Do not climb Gokyo Ri straight after arrival; acclimatise a night first.
