The high point of the trek

Gorak Shep is the last settlement before Everest Base Camp. Many trekkers visit Base Camp the same day or the next morning, and climb Kala Patthar for the best view of Everest.

Kala Patthar is a high ridge with a wide panorama of Everest, Nuptse and surrounding peaks. Sunrise and sunset are popular, but cold and wind can be severe.

Planning the day

Start early, dress warmly and carry water, snacks and a headlamp. Walk slowly and turn back if you feel unwell or the weather worsens.

The views depend on weather. Keep a spare day if possible, and accept that conditions may differ from photos.

Insider tip

Base camp itself has no Everest view; Kala Patthar does.

Avoid this

Do not climb Kala Patthar in a storm or after a bad night with symptoms.
