Why do birdwatchers visit Koshi Tappu?

The short answer

Koshi Tappu is a wetland reserve on the Sapta Koshi floodplain in eastern Nepal, near the Koshi Barrage. Official material records around 440 bird species, and the barrage is a resting place for migrants, especially in winter. It is also the last home of the wild water buffalo in Nepal and shelters Gangetic dolphins and crocodiles in the river.

The reserve is best in winter and early spring. Migration peaks around March. Facilities are basic, with a few lodges and teashops near the headquarters at Kusaha, so travel with a guide. It is reached by road from the Kakarbhitta or Biratnagar side.
