The short answer
The Himalayan monal, called danphe in Nepali, is a brightly coloured pheasant of the high mountains and is widely loved as a national symbol. It lives in forests and meadows of the high hills and is often seen on treks in areas like Langtang, Annapurna and Everest regions.
Other pheasants include the kalij and the crimson horned pheasant. Morning and evening are the best times. Walk quietly and keep your distance; a pair of binoculars helps. Bird guides can improve your chances.
