The short answer
Fly if time matters; drive if you want stops. The flight takes 25 to 30 minutes, and the road about 6 to 8 hours depending on traffic.
Many travellers do one of each: drive one way for the scenery and fly the other way to save time.
Key facts
- Flight
- Fast, weather-dependent
- Road
- Slow, scenic, stops possible
- Best of both
- Drive one way, fly the other
How it works
- Count door-to-door timeThe flight is 25 to 30 minutes, but with airport transfers and check-in it takes about half a day. The road takes 6 to 8 hours, longer in monsoon or after landslides.
- Decide what you want from the dayChoose the flight if you need the time. Choose the road for river valleys, hill towns and stops at Bandipur, Manakamana or Gorkha.
- Mix the twoDrive one way for scenery and fly the other. You get the journey and the saved day without paying for both in hours.
The flight
The flight is short and gives mountain views on a clear morning. It depends on weather, so allow spare time and do not schedule a tight connection afterwards. Airport transfers add time at both ends.
Luggage limits are stricter than on international flights, so pack light. Morning flights are usually more reliable.
The road
The road follows rivers and hillsides, with stops possible at Manakamana, Bandipur or Mugling. Traffic and roadworks can lengthen the journey, and landslides can cause delays in the monsoon.
A private car or tourist bus makes it easier, and starting early helps. A drive can be part of the trip if you plan stops and keep the day free.
Insider tip
A day on the road can include Bandipur or Manakamana.
Avoid this
Do not book a flight with no weather buffer.
Related questions
Is the flight reliable?
Morning flights are usually fine. Afternoon cloud and wind cause most delays, so book the earliest departure and keep a spare half day.
Is the highway safe?
With an experienced driver, yes. Avoid night driving, and check landslide reports in monsoon.
