How it works
- Count the travellersFor three or more people, a private car or van often works out cheaper per person than separate bus seats.
- Consider luggage, pace and stopsA private vehicle lets you leave at dawn, stop for a viewpoint and drop bags at the door. A tourist bus leaves at a set hour, stops at set restaurants and may drop you at a bus park.
- Match the vehicle to the roadTourist coaches suit main routes such as Kathmandu to Pokhara or Chitwan. Narrow hill roads and jeep tracks need a driver who knows them.
Private vehicles
A private car, van or jeep with a driver lets you leave when you want, stop for photos and meals and adapt the day. For groups of three or four, it often works out reasonable per person.
It is also the most comfortable option for families and seniors. Ask about the vehicle type, seat belts and the driver's experience on hill roads.
Tourist buses
Tourist buses run on set routes between Kathmandu, Pokhara and Chitwan, with set departure times and stops. They are cheaper and a good choice for solo travellers on a simple route.
Book in advance in peak season, choose daytime departures and keep valuables with you. Night buses on mountain roads are best avoided.
Insider tip
For families and seniors, a private vehicle is usually worth it.
Avoid this
Do not take night buses without checking safety.
