The short answer
Nepal is a country of steep rivers, so waterfalls are everywhere, but only a handful are easy to reach and impressive enough to plan a stop around. The most visited are Davis Falls in Pokhara, the stepped cascades at Sundarijal above Kathmandu and the roadside falls near Jalbire on the way to the Tibet border. On the trekking trails, falls such as those near Chamje and the Annapurna sanctuary approach are a bonus, not a destination.
Think of waterfalls here as a rain-season treat. Most carry the most water from July to September and stay strong into October. In the dry months many shrink to a trickle, so decide by season first and by place second.

How it works
- Pick the season firstWaterfalls peak after the monsoon. If you travel in dry months, treat them as a pleasant stop, not the goal.
- Choose by base cityFrom Pokhara use Davis Falls and the Seti gorge; from Kathmandu use Sundarijal or the Jalbire road.
- Combine with a second sightAdd a cave, temple or viewpoint on the same road so the drive feels worthwhile.
- Check the roadLandslides after heavy rain can close side roads to falls, so ask your driver the day before.
- Keep it shortMost falls take 20 to 40 minutes to see; do not allocate more than a half day.
Insider tip
Pair a waterfall with something else on the same road; very few are worth a trip on their own.
Avoid this
Do not plan a waterfall day in January and expect a roar.
Related questions
Are there any very tall waterfalls in Nepal?
Some tall falls exist in remote valleys, but they are hard to reach and rarely visited. For travellers the practical choices are the roadside and trailside falls described in this section.
Can I swim near waterfalls?
Generally no. Currents, slippery rock and sudden rises in water make swimming unsafe at most falls.
