The short answer
Patan (Lalitpur) preserves a smaller but richer square than Kathmandu, with the Krishna Mandir (stone), Bhimsen temple, Vishwanath temple and the royal palace courtyards that now hold the Patan Museum. Metalwork and woodcarving are the local pride, and artisans still work in the lanes around the square.
Plan two to three hours. The museum rewards slow looking and has a pleasant courtyard cafe. Crowds are lighter than in Kathmandu, and the town feels less rushed.
