The short answer
This is the old royal heart of Kathmandu: a cluster of palaces, courtyards, temples and open squares gathered around the former Malla and Shah palace complex. Key sights include Hanuman Dhoka palace itself, Kasthamandap (rebuilt), Taleju temple (closed to non-Hindus), the Kumari Ghar and the sprawling temple platforms that give the square its character.
Allow two to three hours, preferably in the early morning when light is soft and crowds thin. Parts were damaged in 2015 and restoration has continued, so some structures may be rebuilt or screened by scaffolding.
