The four seasons on the trail

Autumn, from October to November, brings stable weather and sharp views, with busy trails. Spring, from March to May, adds warm days and rhododendron blossoms, though views can be hazy. Winter is cold with clear skies and fewer trekkers, but snow can block high passes.

The monsoon, from June to September, is wet and cloudy, with leeches on lower trails and many views hidden. Rain-shadow areas such as Mustang and Upper Dolpo are drier and can be good choices.

Matching month and trek

For Everest and Annapurna base camps, choose autumn or spring. For high passes, avoid deep winter and the monsoon. For lower, shorter treks, winter can be pleasant with warm layers.

Book flights, permits and lodges early for October, check the forecast before you leave, and keep spare days in your schedule. Pack for the season: warm layers in winter, rain gear in spring and monsoon.

Insider tip

Book flights and permits early for October.

Avoid this

Do not trek high passes in winter without proper gear.
