The character of Mera Peak
Mera Peak is a high, long climb in the Hinku and Hongu valleys, famous for wide views of five of the world's eight-thousand-metre peaks on a clear day. In good conditions the climb is non-technical, but it involves glacier travel, high camps and long cold days.
The approach can be quiet and beautiful, but the altitude and cold are the real challenge. It suits strong trekkers who have spent time at height and who respect the mountain.
Preparing well
Get a medical check, build endurance for many days of walking, and choose an itinerary with generous acclimatisation. Carry warm gear for very cold nights, and learn to use crampons and rope with your guide.
Start the summit day early, keep a spare day for weather, and agree turn-back rules in advance. The season matters: pick the clear windows in spring or autumn.
Insider tip
Start in Lukla or Hinku valley for a quieter approach.
Avoid this
Do not underestimate cold and altitude.
