Can a first-timer climb Island Peak?

The short answer

Island Peak (Imja Tse) is a popular first Himalayan climb at about 6,189 m. A fit trekker with basic training can attempt it, but the glacier, headwall and altitude are serious. Treat it as a mountaineering trip, not a trek.

  2. Choose a safe itineraryLook for extra acclimatisation days.
  3. Practise gear skillsUse a training day at base camp.
  4. Climb in a summit windowOperators watch weather and snow.
  5. Plan a bufferKeep extra days in case of delays.

What the climb involves

Island Peak, also called Imja Tse, is reached after a trek through the Khumbu to Chhukhung. The climb itself includes a rocky ridge, a glacier section and a steep headwall that is often protected with fixed ropes. It needs basic skills with crampons, ice axe and harness.

Summit day starts in the middle of the night and can last ten or more hours, in cold and thin air. It is a mountaineering climb, not a long hike, so respect it.

Getting ready and choosing a plan

Plan a trek of two weeks or more with rest days to acclimatise, and consider a high pass or Lobuche East as a test. Practise gear skills at base camp with your guide, and keep one spare day for the summit window.

Choose an operator with experienced guides, good equipment and a clear safety plan. Train for months, and be honest with yourself and your guide about how you feel.

Insider tip

Do Lobuche or a high pass first to test your altitude response.

Avoid this

Do not rush; most failures come from poor acclimatisation.
