Can you still trek the Annapurna Circuit?

By Base Camp Tours, licensed Nepal travel agency (Tourism License 3121/080) · Updated · 2 min read

The short answer

Yes, but roads now follow much of the route, so many trekkers use jeeps for some sections and trek the quieter parts. Thorong La (about 5,416 m) remains the high point.

How the circuit has changed

Roads now follow much of the lower sections, so many trekkers use jeeps for parts of the route and walk the quieter stretches. The high crossing at Thorong La remains the heart of the trek, and the landscape from green valleys to the dry, windy Manang and Mustang side is still extraordinary.

A good plan uses roads where they save time and trails where the scenery is best, and includes side trips such as Tilicho Lake or the Nar and Phu valleys to avoid traffic.

Crossing Thorong La safely

Spend enough nights in Manang and Yak Kharka to acclimatise before the pass, start early on crossing day and carry warm layers, water and snacks. The pass can be windy and cold, and conditions change quickly.

Check the weather and the state of the trail with your guide, and keep a spare day. Do not cross if you feel unwell, and tell your guide about symptoms early.

Insider tip

Use side valleys and the Tilicho route to avoid roads.

Avoid this

Do not cross Thorong La without acclimatising.
