The short answer
Carry some cash. ATMs are common in cities and scarce in the mountains, and card acceptance varies. Plan to use cards and ATMs in towns and cash in the hills.
A simple split works well: card for hotels and larger shops, ATM cash for everyday spending, and small notes for tips, entrance fees and village purchases.

How to use cards and ATMs
International cards usually work at ATMs in Kathmandu, Pokhara and other cities, but machines have limits and your bank may add fees. Withdraw a larger amount less often, use machines in banks or hotels, and keep your card in sight. Tell your bank about your trip so it does not block your card.
Larger hotels, restaurants and agencies often accept cards, sometimes with a surcharge. If a machine is out of order or empty, which can happen on busy days, try another bank. Always carry a small amount of backup cash.
Cash for the hills
On treks and in villages, cash is the rule. Estimate your daily spending for meals, drinks, charging and tips, then add a margin. Small notes are far more useful than large ones, since lodges may not have change.
Keep money in two or three places and in a waterproof bag. Leave extra cash and your passport original in the hotel safe in Kathmandu when you trek. See the currency exchange and money quick answers for more.
