The short answer
Most foreign nationals need a visa. Tourist visas are commonly available on arrival at the airport and land borders, or by applying online before you travel, and are issued for short, medium or longer stays. Fees and rules change, so confirm with official sources.
Citizens of India do not need a visa in the usual way. Other travellers should check the current requirements for their nationality well before departure.

- Prepare a photo and passportYour passport should be valid for at least six months.
- Pay in cash or cardOften at the airport kiosk or online in advance.
How the process usually works
Many visitors fill in the online arrival form before they fly, then complete payment and photo capture at the airport. Others do it all at the counter, which can take longer in busy periods. Have your passport, a recent photo and any receipts ready.
Your passport must be valid for the whole trip, with enough empty pages. Keep your visa receipt with your passport, because it may be checked on departure or at borders. Fees are set by the authorities and change, so check the official immigration website for the current position.
Extensions, borders and special cases
If you want to stay longer, you can usually apply to extend your visa at the immigration office before it expires. Apply a few days early, with your passport, a photo and the form. See the visa extension answer for the steps.
Overland crossings from India have their own checks and opening hours, and some nationalities have different rules at land borders. Treks in restricted areas need additional permits that your operator arranges. Always confirm requirements before you travel, because rules can change at short notice.
Insider tip
Fees and durations have changed more than once. Check the Department of Immigration website before you go.
