The short answer
Gorakhpur is a major rail hub in Uttar Pradesh, with direct trains from Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and many other cities. The Sunauli border is roughly 90 to 100 km away by road, which is usually about two to three hours depending on traffic. Many travellers start tours from Gorakhpur railway station, with a private car waiting for the border transfer.
From Sunauli the Nepal side town is Bhairahawa, close to Lumbini. From there, Pokhara and Kathmandu are long road days or short flights. If Lumbini is your first stop, plan a night there before moving on.
