The short answer
Greet people with a folded-hand namaste, remove your shoes before entering a home, and use your right hand to give or receive things. Dress modestly, avoid public displays of affection, and ask before photographing people or religious objects. Do not point your feet at people or at shrines, and do not touch anything on a household altar.
Accept tea or food when it is offered, even if you take only a little, and say thank you. Ask your host about house rules, bathroom use and meal times. A small gift such as tea, fruit or school supplies, or a contribution agreed through your guide, is appreciated. Keep noise low at night.
