What is Tihar, the festival of lights?

By Base Camp Tours, licensed Nepal travel agency (Tourism License 3121/080) · Updated · 1 min read

The short answer

Tihar falls in October or November and lasts five days. It honours Laxmi, goddess of wealth, and also crows, dogs, cows and oxen on separate days. Houses are cleaned and lit with oil lamps and candles, doorways are decorated with colourful rangoli, and groups sing and dance from door to door.

It is one of the most beautiful times to be in Kathmandu, with lamps in every window. Streets fill with fireworks, so ear protection helps. Many offices close for a day or two, but tourist areas stay open.
