The short answer
Chhath is a major sun-worship festival of the Terai, observed in October or November, a few days after Tihar. Families fast, bathe in rivers or ponds, and offer food and fruit to the setting and rising sun. Janakpur, Birgunj and other Terai towns have the largest gatherings, with thousands of people standing in water at dawn and dusk.
It is deeply devotional and very photogenic, but visitors should keep a respectful distance and not enter the water areas. Roads near ghats get crowded, so plan transport carefully.
