The short answer
The Nepali New Year falls in mid-April, at the start of the month of Baisakh. Streets fill with greetings, family outings and temple visits. The most famous celebration is Bisket Jatra in Bhaktapur, with a chariot pull, a tall pole raised and days of festivities.
In Pokhara, the Phewa New Year festival adds games and events by the lake. It is a pleasant, mild time of year to visit, but Bhaktapur is crowded and hotels fill early. Check dates against the Nepali calendar, which counts years differently from the Gregorian one.
