What is Lhosar in Nepal?

By Base Camp Tours, licensed Nepal travel agency (Tourism License 3121/080) · Updated · 1 min read

The short answer

Lhosar means new year for several mountain and Himalayan communities, and it is celebrated at different dates. Tamu (Gurung) Lhosar comes in late December, Sonam (Tamang) Lhosar in January or February, and Gyalpo Lhosar, widely observed by Sherpa and Tibetan communities, around February or March.

Expect family gatherings, monastery prayers, traditional dress, dance and special foods. In Kathmandu, Boudhanath and Swayambhunath are lively, and in Pokhara you may see Gurung celebrations. Dates follow community calendars, so check ahead.
