The short answer
Holi, in February or March, is the colour festival, with powders and water thrown on the streets. In Kathmandu the main celebrations are around Durbar Square and in the Terai, it is a big family festival. It is joyful but rough, so wear clothes you do not mind losing and protect your phone and camera.
Teej, in August or September, is a women's festival. Women wear red, sing, dance and fast for a happy marriage and family health, with large gatherings at Pashupatinath. Respect their privacy and ask before photographing.
