The short answer
The city is lively through the year, but a few dates stand out. Vivah Panchami, in the Hindu month of Margashirsha, around November or December, re-enacts the wedding of Sita and Rama and is the biggest event. Ram Navami in spring celebrates Rama's birth, and Dashain in September or October, the great autumn festival, brings special worship at the temples.
Chhath, the sun worship festival, fills the ponds and riverbanks with families offering prayers at sunrise and sunset, and Jhijhiya and Sama Chakeba bring women's dances and songs. Full moon and the eleventh day of each lunar fortnight draw smaller crowds. Dates change every year, so check the calendar before you book.
