The short answer
Nepal has a Tourist Police unit that helps visitors with safety concerns and travel problems, with a main office at Bhrikuti Mandap in Kathmandu and officers on duty in tourist areas such as Thamel. The Nepal Tourism Board runs an information centre at the Tourist Service Centre in Kathmandu and desks at airports and some border and city offices.
Trekkers can visit the Himalayan Rescue Association in Thamel for altitude sickness talks and advice, and it runs aid posts in high villages in season. Keep your embassy, insurer and operator numbers saved, and note down your hotel name in Nepali or on a card.
