What is Rani Pokhari?

By Base Camp Tours, licensed Nepal travel agency (Tourism License 3121/080) · Updated · 1 min read

The short answer

Rani Pokhari is a square pond in the middle of Kathmandu, built in the 17th century by a Malla king to console his queen after the death of their son. A small temple stands in the centre, and the pond has been repaired after earthquake damage in recent years. It sits close to the old bazaar, so it is a natural start or end for a walk through Asan, Indra Chowk and Durbar Square.

On foot the old bazaar is the best way to feel the city. Move from Rani Pokhari through the spice stalls and shrines to Kathmandu Durbar Square, stopping for tea. The lanes are narrow, loud and wonderful.
