The short answer
Makalu Barun National Park adjoins Sagarmatha National Park in the east and protects steep valleys from lowland forest to the Makalu peak. It is known for biodiversity, with many bird and plant species, and for being remote and little visited.
Trekkers enter it on the Makalu Base Camp route and the Arun valley approach. The park is a place for slow travellers who want wild country; do not expect lodges or road access in the upper valleys.
